Week 3

During week 3, I have been much more independent, as I now know the basics of what I need to when it comes to sourcing products and entering them into a schedule. Nadine had set tasks for me over the course of the week for fast approaching projects that have a quick turnaround.

Portsmouth

I made a Google Sketchup Model of the Student Accommodation space, based in Portsmouth, that I mentioned in Week 1. To do this I used the Architects plans (which are below) and the Design Direction presentation, to ensure that everything was accurate and according to the scheme. I was given the opportunity to play around with the media unit and study section - I created quick concept sketches of different ways this could be.

Above is the CAD drawing that I based my 3D Sketchup model on. I ensured that it was as accurate as possible. I found it useful when doing my model, to have the 'Design Direction' presentation up on the screen to use as a reference for the finishes, colours and details. In the office, I have a double screen setup which is really useful for things like this - the screenshot below shows my screen when I was working on the model.

Bath

This week we started to source products for the Bath project. This is a project with an EXTREMELY quick turn around (it was only given to WN Interiors last week and is being installed next week). I was given the task to source some vintage products for this particular project, as the clients wanted a mixture of both old and new. There were a lot of products chosen that were either out of stock or way over the clients budget, and so I was given the task to 'reselect' and find alternatives. The creative director, Sarah, had found a chair that she really liked for the scheme that worked well in the space – unfortunately it was over budget, so I was given the task to find an alternative. I was able to find a chair that looked nearly exactly the same but for a fraction of the price, she was extremely happy with this!! For this project I also called up suppliers to find out more info about products - for example, whether the legs came off the sofa. This is important for this project in particular because the access to this building is really difficult (it is in Bath city centre and also is a very tall and narrow building). Luckily the legs came off and so the sofa choice was perfect.

Reflection

This week I have been really involved in the ongoing projects. I also got to see a couple of clients houses when dropping stuff off to Sarah, the creative director, at meetings. I had to relay information from the office to Sarah at the clients house. The client was really lovely and her house was stunning! WN Interiors have already done some work here and are slowly making their way through the space. I also got to meet Sidney the dog who was the cutest!! This week I've also learnt a lot of general things such as how to fill out an expense form, which is really useful as I can now do these every week without having to bother anyone. I am feeling much more confident in what I'm doing, and as time goes on, I feel I don't have to ask as many questions. It has been interesting talking to Laura, one of the designers here, about her time at AUB when she went there. She came from a model making background and I was keen to hear about how she decided to go into interiors. It has given me confidence that I am doing the right course for me.
