As I entered the space, I was greeted by Sarah, the Creative Director, who introduced me to the rest of the office. I was taken around the space, which is made up of two rooms, and shown different things I may be using - including the sample boxes, the general desk space, and the general facilities, including toilets & wc, and parking. Nadine, who is the PA to the Creative Director, then ran us through the health and safety procedures, and fire safety. By "us" I mean, me and Tiffany, who is in Year 10, and is also here on work placement for a week. I was then working along side Nick, one of the designers, on the Portsmouth project, which I will go into more detail about below.

Portsmouth Site

University

I have been assisting Nick with the proposed conversion of a building in Portsmouth with a previous use an office. I am not able to specify the building name publicly, but there is an image of it above. I supported Nick with some preliminary research which included investigating what the target market of students in the area look for when choosing their accommodation for the university year. I decided that the best way to find this information out would be to actually go to Portsmouth and ask students a short series of questions. Below is an example of some of the results of a survey that I carried out with answers from 60+ people.

I went around Portsmouth University campus and the Student Union, and asked people 3 short questions to get an idea of what they will look for when deciding on accommodation for the university year. I found that the most important factors students consider is the price and the location of their accommodation. I presented the responders of the survey with 3 different scheme ideas and asked them which one they preferred and the colourful scheme came out on top.

Above are the initial three scheme ideas that Nick made. (it is likely that these will completely change, so I am allowed to present these) I presented these to students to find out which one they liked the most. The most popular one was the first, more colourful, scheme.

When it comes to facilities, people were most interested in having a concierge reception which is 24 hours and also a common space where they can socialise. These findings will be presented to the client for this project next week as research to back up concept ideas.

Wilson

As part of another project (for client Wilson), I was asked to devise a scheme for a guest bedroom. The client already had chosen the wallpaper, and I was asked to find materials for two sets of curtains and a headboard. I did this by looking in the large collection of material samples at WN Interiors, and finding ones I believed to be most appropriate for the project and what the client wanted. I then called providers of the fabrics to find out product information, including the trade price, and then entered all this information into the 'schedule' which is a large excel document which is made for each project to create project quotes.

Reflection

Overall, my first week was very enjoyable - and definitely not as scary as I thought it would be. It has definitely been challenging having to wake up before 7am to start that day (I miss having naps!!). Everyone in the office has been really nice and welcoming, and I am looking forward to the rest of my time here.
