Portsmouth
I used this week to work on a 3D representation of what the student accommodation studios will look like in the Portsmouth project, which I worked on during week 1. Since week 1, Sarah and Nick have had a meeting with the client and the schemes and ideas have developed. The client liked the initial scheme idea and also the scheme which the students of Portsmouth preferred, and so the decision was made to marry the two together.
I used the new scheme idea and the technical drawings sent over from the architect to create an accurate representation of the space. I started off using basic shapes to symbolise different elements of the design and then gradually began to add detail. The kitchen and bathroom are already installed and so I had to work around these. I created a short animation (seen below) as if the user is walking through the space to simulate what it may be like when it is in use.
I made a walkthrough video by using the camera tools (including ‘position camera’, ‘walk’ and ‘look around’) I had to ensure that this was a total of 1 minute so that it could be posted to the company Instagram at a later date. I also included company branding (a watermark and logo) For these tasks I used Google SketchUp and iMovie. There was a total of 47 scenes to ensure that the clip flowed smoothly through the space.
In the Office
This week, I also generated purchase orders in the schedule ready for Nadine to go ahead with ordering things for projects - this week was particularly busy so there was lots of purchase orders to do. I used one of the purchase orders to put through a purchase on the website - some items were minimum quantity order so I had to double check what I was ordering - some rooms also crossed over so even if a product appeared on two different rows, I would have to alter the quantity.
Bath
This week was particularly busy with up and coming installs, so there was a lot of preparation work to do. I framed a lot of art work this week ready for the installation of 5 serviced apartments in Bath for next week.
I helped Nick to prepare tool kits ready for the Bath installs - these were made up of basic tools and accessories that might be needed during the install. This week I spoke to Laura more about the time scale of projects, she can range different amounts of time depending on whether they are commercial or retail - longer projects have lasted 2+ and 4+ years, these were new builds where WN Interiors will work along side the architects. There was one client who bought one of these new build houses that WN Interiors worked along side the architects with, where they designed main spaces like the lounge, kitchen and master bedroom, and the new owners contacted WN Interiors to have the rest of the house done. The shortest project Laura has worked on lasted from September until around Christmas time which was for a master bedroom.
Reflection
During week 4, I have mostly been focusing on doing purchase orders and schedules with Nadine, as well as finishing off my SketchUp model and animation, which I have really enjoyed. This week has been really busy and so there has been plenty of things to do. Normally I don’t work very well under pressure, but I am really enjoying all of the tasks that I have been doing. I am feeling much more confident using the excel schedules and inputting information as well as creating purchase orders .It is great that Nadine and Sarah are able to set tasks for me and I can now get on with it as I know what I’m doing. I have also enjoyed times when I have had to drop things to meetings for the director at clients houses as it has given me opportunity to see a little bit more of the area along the way, as well as seeing the clients houses where the work has and will be taking place. I am getting along with the team really well and it is nice to see how great everybody works together to get things done.
